DECEPTION n

1. the practice of deliberately making somebody believe things that are not true.
2. an act, trick, or device intended to deceive somebody

When I first meet this light blue boat from Marina del Rey there was no DECEPTION. This was the boat to beat. The year was 1991 and it was the start of the highly competitive Fabulous Fifty’s fleet in Southern California. Owner Dave Meginnity and his new yacht DECEPTION had made a name for herself already in the 1989 Trans Pac by placing forth in her class. At the time the boys from Santa Cruz aboard ALLURE had the most time on the water along with a brand new Ross 45 design named “M-1”. DECEPTION had her hands full that year and Meginnity came back the following seven years with straight bullets in most all the events she sailed. Of course when you have Pete Heck running the program that helps and Pete knows a good bet.
So, Back to 1991 and the Trans Pac. Meginnity had just changed the rig before the start of the race and DECEPTION was locked and loaded. I was on Hull 25 SAMURAI and four 50’s had entered. The race was slowed by light winds during the mid-portion, but we still had a very exciting start and finsh. The starting line was one of the most aggressive starts I’ve seen, for a long distance race, with four boats going over early. For SAMURAI, the finish of the race was very exciting 26.6 knots of boat speed. “ NO SHIT” it was the third wave in a row and I kept that memory still after 17 years as one of the best. DECEPTION, SAMURAI and ALLURE were all heading south. Deception ended up sailing higher and just as fast as us and ended up sailing ten less miles than us to the island. Like I said there is no DECEPTION she is fast.

Around 1995 the Seattle area stared to buy up the Santa Cruz 50’s and at one time had as many as 9 boats on the racecourse. HOOLIGAN (ex: DECEPTION) was now painted white and she was in control of the sound and spent a number of years racing in buoy mode. No water makers, no spare rudder systems, no SSB’s. This class lasted until around 2001.

In 2001 Bruce Anderson was looking for a new boat and I told him a little deception of the “Magic” boat in Seattle. Bruce is close with Bob Perry and when Bruce called Bob and asked about the boat I had a deal. Two weeks later we are sailing down from Seattle. Now if you never have sailed the Oregon coast that is a good thing. KEEP it that way! I never had seen such big waves and the boat did fine. We were trying to keep her from going down the waves and keep her under control in over 45knts of wind and HUGE waves. The boat will take you home in safety.

The next year we raced in the 2002 Pacific Cup with eight Santa Cruz 50’s on the starting line. Just after the start it was easy to see that the three boats to beat was OCTAVIA, GONE WITH THE WIND and us on CHICKEN LITTLE Ex: DECEPTION, HOOLIGAN. We were all very close to each other all the way across the Pacific. It came down to the last day and OCTAVIA sailed very well and found a squall and rode it in the last three hours of the race. She was sailing seven knots faster than us for the last three hours and beat us in by an hour. OCTAVIA crew was the boat to beat and we almost got them with our boat.

Bruce sold the boat two years ago and the boat name was changed back to “DECEPTION” THANK GOD! And the owner has placed a complete North sail inventory on her and was coached by on of the best sailors in our area Kevin Miller. The owner has done whatever the boat needed to keep her in top shape. Deception won the high point series in 06 making her the fastest boat in Ventura County on corrected time as well as boat for boat. She won every major series in Ventura County. Set a new course record for the C. I. to MDR race.

WELL? Now it’s your turn. Yeah, you can buy a 50 for less. Although remember what your dad always told you” You get what you pay for”. “DECEPTION” IS THE MAGIC SC 50 and with the Newport Harbor Cabo race gaining ground and Trans Pac picking up pace. There are now seven active 50’s sailing point to point races and let me tell you there is no DECEPTION that this boat will bring you to the top of the fleet.
