The Harbor Report: A thank you to the race organizers

Are you ready to rumble? The attention signal has been sounded for the 2012 sailing season. That's right, it's time to pick up the Assn. of Orange Coast Yacht Clubs (AOCYC) 2012 racing calendar and start marking down which events you plan on sailing in this year.

I would like to give a shoutout to the people in our harbor who are managing our winter races. If you are like me and say "I do not sail in the rain," you have to give these people a big thank you for doing race committee work, because no matter what the weather is like, they cannot call in sick.

The first person I need to thank is Paul DeCapua and his crew from Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club in running the Hot Rum Series, and starting the Bogart Series for our harbor's PHRF boats.

The next person who comes to mind is Balboa Yacht Club's Pinky Green, for running the inside Sunkist Series and the Super Sabot Saturdays.

Next up is BYC's John Lee and his crew for running the Outside Sunkist Series. Make sure you ask John who his mark set people are and give them a thank you (outside mark set is not an easy job this time of year).

Next we have Newport Harbor Yacht Club's Fleet Captain Robert Kenny, who is running this year's Winter Series. By the time the Winter Series is complete, he would have started and finished 12 races with as many as 56 boats entered.

Well done to all our harbor's PROs this winter season, and thank you.

Our top sailors this winter have been: Gale Pickey, Lee Sutherland and Kurt Wiese, in the NHYC Winter Series Harbor 20 A Fleet; Harbor 20 B Rolly Pulaski, Len Connelly and Jack Cannon are leading B Fleet, with Tom Corkett and Nic Froehlich taking a commanding lead after the next three races and receiving their third throw out for the series. With one point separating Nic and Tom going into the last three races, it should be a good race.

In the Harbor 20 C Fleet, Jonathan Cheadle appears to be holding a strong lead over the fleet. Overall Winners of BCYC "Hot Rum Series" are John Szalay, Dan Rossen and Beverly Evans. In BYC's Sunkist Series Outside, there is a close battle in PHRF A between It's OK, Amante and Dare.

In class B, Doubletime has a solid lead. Over in Class C, Legacy seems to have the advantage, and in Class D, Violetta de la Mare has a comfortable lead. Class E will come down to the last race between Whisper, Campaign II and Pussycat.

BYC Inside Sunkist has been well attended, with Bob Larzelere and Brian Mason duking it out in the Thistle fleet. In the Harbor 20 As, Gary Thorne and Guy Doran are going into the last two races tied for first place. In Harbor 20 B, Rolly Pulaski appears to have this series wrapped up. That's no easy task with more than 18 boats signed up in Harbor 20 B fleet in this series.

In the Harbor 20 C fleet Jonathan Cheadle appears to be ready to move up to B Fleet. Next are thosefrostbitten Laser sailors with Gator Cook trying to keep Steve Kent and Alan Andrews behind him. Of the fleet of 14 Sabot A fleet sailors signed up, Molly Lynch has closed the deal, but there appears to be a good race for second place between Terese Ivory and Lyn Acosta.

For those of you who did not want to sail in the rain last Saturday, BCYC hosted the start of the Bogart Series. I sailed with Dan Rossen aboard his boat, Problem Child, and I can describe the race in one word: epic.

We had 24 knots of breeze when we headed downwind and surfed the whole way home from Long Beach.

There's A Lot To Learn From Being Diligent

While some people view hourly engine-room checks under way as an interruption of the fun of cruising, my wife, Maria, and I actually embrace the activity. Boating’s enjoyment comes with responsibilities that we do not take lightly, including ensuring that all systems are functioning properly. The last place we want to deal with mechanical issues is 25 miles offshore. To help us minimize this possibility, we always adhered to a detailed preventative maintenance schedule on Maria Elena (we are between boats right now) and made hourly engine-room checks to help us spot potential problems long before they became major issues.

Our hourly checks started in the pilothouse, recording date, time and GPS location followed by the basic engine instruments, including the hourmeter, oil pressure and temperature, engine temperature, voltage, rpm and speed. After that information was recorded, I walked downstairs to the engine room for visual inspections and temperature readings. During this time, Maria stayed in the pilothouse and kept watch. Prior to entering the engine room, I always looked through the small glass window in the engine-room door to make sure there were no signs of smoke or fire.

Upon entering the engine room, I conducted audio and visual inspections of the main engine. You can learn a lot from listening to your engine. Our Lugger diesel engine had its own unique rhythm that didn’t change except when the rpm did. Visual inspections included the transmission, the fuel valves and lines, the hydraulic system and the propeller shaft coupling for appropriate dripping. After all of the visual inspections were complete, I used our infrared heat gun to record temperature levels — 10 different readings of all of the vital systems on board.

Once the readings were recorded, I returned to the pilothouse, compared the new data to previous inspections and looked for unfavorable trends. Diesel engines take a little time to reach normal operating temperatures, and understanding their temperature in relation to running time and rpm is important to avoid potentially serious damage.

Another critical system that requires timely attention is the main engine propeller-shaft stuffing box. The stuffing box can overheat in just 30 minutes of running time if it is adjusted too tightly. We took temperature readings at both the coupling and shaft to ensure we were running at the correct temperature based on engine rpm, water temperature and duration of the cruise.

After our trip, I entered the handwritten data on an Excel spreadsheet and plotted the data on a graph by system. The graph provided us with a nice visual, showing trend data that we saved and compared to other cruises. Some interesting observations we gathered from the data included the effects of running with and against the current, a clean vs. dirty bottom and variation in water temperature.

One additional bonus to maintaining good records was when it came time to sell the boat. Being able to show prospective buyers this level of detail on the operation of the boat provided them with a good sense that we cared for and maintained the boat to the highest standards. It also helped the new owner understand what was normal and abnormal with all major systems.

The Harbor Report: Observations about Newport Harbor

As I carefully tucked away my prized collection of 27 Christmas Reyn Spooner shirts and thanked the Man Above that the holiday commercials have stopped, I thought it was a good time to head down to the harbor and take a look around.

When I started out on the afternoon of Jan. 2, I expected that Newport Harbor would be quiet at this time of the year.

At my first stop on the Lido Peninsula, I was surprised to see how many big boats were still in town. In years past a number of owners would do their best not to be around on Jan. 1 in an effort to avoid property taxes.

With this in mind, I going to leave out the names of the boats and just describe them as best I can. Two of my favorite race boats were receiving new bottom paint and rudder repairs at the Newport Shipyard, along with one of my favorite performance cruising boats.

It's always fun to imagine which type of boat you would buy if you won the lottery but discouraging to find out that winning the state lottery would not be enough to purchase the megayacht in front of the shipyard.

On my way off the peninsula, I stopped at the Lido Bridge and counted 16 large charter boats. That's one more than last year, and my mind wandered to the Christmas Boat Parade. I had heard reports that as many as 10 large charter boats sailed into town to load and unload passengers.

According to my simple calculation, that equaled 25 large charter boats, and almost half of them were guests. Did our guests receive their Marine Activates permits? Did they use their holding tanks, etc.?

I placed a couple of calls to find out the answers to these questions, and have not received a return call at the time of writing.

I then drove down Mariner's Mile — no simple task this last month. It's taken me over a half-hour to drive the mile, plus blend in holiday stress and bicycle riders.

It's become a lot easier to notice my car in town with the boat fenders hanging down the side.

There was not much to report at the repo yard or at the Larsen and Basin shipyards. But I did notice people working on their boats by themselves and had to laugh at one person who had been working on a fiberglass project.

This poor guy came up from his aft lazarette completely covered in fiberglass dust with no shirt on. I am talking Casper! Ya think he is still inching?

I wrote my column a week early because I am helping my good friends Carole and Bill Craig deliver their Grand Banks-Europa 42 La Sirena to Mazatlan, Mexico. This boat is perfect.

This will be my 30th time past the cape first-time power. The weather looks good and I just checked the boat for bananas; it's all good! Note: It's bad luck to have bananas onboard a boat.

I was looking for more entertainment so I headed over to boat ramp at the dunes. On my way over I remembered that the new Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) has taken effect Jan 1^st. Now everyone that knows me understands I am not a fisherman and I do not look like one. So when I approached people, pulling their boats out, an enquired if they had seen any Fish and Game Wardens. The response was not very friendly until I noticed some local’s who know me. “ I was in Catalina all weekend Len and fishing next to what I understand is the boundaries. We did not notice any Fish & Game anywhere”. Another person told me “ ya see that person over there, he is a retired warden and he told me earlier that he was going to fish wherever the heck he wanted”. Don’t get me wrong, I am not challenging our local wardens to get on the water more or to fix their two broken down boats on shell island. Most of the people I talked to told me that if the wardens really wanted to get something done they should ride a bike around the back bay and hang out at the launch ramp. “That’s where you are going to find the people that do the most damage to our marine life” one old salt told me.

Watching the news and reading the Daily Pilot this week, I felt I better review my 2011 Harbor Report columns.

This year I wrote 40 columns, and to receive the best presentation of this year's review you must recall the theme song of the Clint Eastwood movie "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly." Then go online to Pilot's webpage and type the keywords "Len Bose" into the Pilot's search bar. Then all my columns will appear.

The Good

I am going to assume most of you will agree that the best thing that happened this year was the completion of the Rhine Channel. There are far too many people to thank for completing this task, but our Harbor Resources Manager Chris Miller and his crew completed this project well ahead of schedule and did an excellent job. My column about it ran Aug. 5.

The stimulation of the Newport High-Point Series was with this year's winner, John Szalay, aboard his boat, the Pussycat. John received awards from the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club and Balboa Yacht Club, and his boat was also mentioned in my column about this year's 20 most interesting boats.

Newport Harbor's Marina Recycling Center was another one of my silly ideas that I hope becomes a reality in 2012. Those columns ran in February and August.

If you are a history buff like myself, you should check out my three-part story in April about the history of boat-building in Costa Mesa.

My best response always comes from Newport's 20 Most Interesting Boats and our harbor's two most interesting people. Yeah, I placed a Duffy electric boat in the powerboat list.

While reviewing the list with one of our harbor's travel lift operators, he told me he called five of his friends to tell them about the boat he was delivering to the shipyard.

In contrast, he pointed to a new 90-foot yacht and said I did not call anyone when I picked that one up. These stories ran in November and December.

The Bad

The bad this year is when we lost Dr. Nina Nielsen. Later this year a special award was presented in her name to the first female finisher in the Sabot Nationals.

The Farwell family leaving the Swales Yacht Anchorage and apartments after 52 years was another sad occurrence. The Farwell family have always treated me very kindly and are good people. It was hard to see them have to stop managing the Anchorage.

This one had to be the most embarrassing for me. In my Nov. 29 column regarding our local fishermen, I asked Tom Pearson of Pearson's Port "What type of weather keeps you from fishing?"

He replied: "The wind and swell. I am too old to snorkel anymore." (Which means the waves are coming over the pilothouse and he needs a mask and snorkel just to work on deck)

The line was edited to read: "Yes, it's a good life and it's still exciting," he replied. But, he added, he's now too old to snorkel.

The Ugly

It was a very good year in our harbor, but I still have issues with our tideland permits. I do not have enough information to comment on this subject, but I still have to wonder if the cost of permits has been spread equally throughout the harbor.

My ugliest mistake has to have been the mass email I sent telling everyone to look for my 20 most interesting boats story. I must have had five spelling mistakes. I learned a big lesson and have to give Chip a shoutout for that one.

The Harbor Report: Tips for the Christmas Boat Parade

I felt honored to be part of the crew who delivered the Balboa Yacht Club's new Committee Boat from San Francisco to Marina del Rey. I wanted to make one shout-out to our captain, Richard DeWolf: "I will go to sea with you any time." Without a doubt, Rich is the most qualified and trusted skipper I have sailed with.

Now that I am home safely, let's talk about what is going on in Newport Harbor this week.

That's the 103rd annual Christmas Boat Parade, which runs from Wednesday through Sunday.
If you are like me, it's kind of a "bah, humbug!" type of thing. Do I really have to go freeze my butt off and fight the traffic?
Then I look at my family and think it's time to start "Feelin' Christmas-Sea in Newport Beach." Life is too short to live like Ebenezer Scrooge. It's time to "Go Big and Go Newport," and we do the Christmas Boat Parade in this town.
I also happened to receive a phone call from this year's parade chairmen, Don Lawrenz and David Beek, whose great-grandfather was one of the founders. At last count there were more than 70 boats entered in this year's parade.
A couple of new features to note this year: For the locals, bleachers have been added in the Balboa Fun Zone, where the parade is expected to pass by around 6:34 p.m.; and if you go down Dover Drive and pull into the parking lot for the Reuben E. Lee, you should have good access to the parade around 7:44 p.m.
I also enjoy walking along South Bayfront on Balboa Island to view all the decorated homes. I find it easiest to bring my bike in the car, drop the family off at the Balboa Island bridge, park in Irvine Terrace, find a place to lock my bike, then walk down South Bayfront.

While onboard a boat if I am not in the parade, I let the parade go by, then wait about 30 minutes before I leave the slip and do a harbor cruise. I try to avoid the parade traffic the best I can. If I have to watch the parade away from my slip, I hang out in the Linda Isle lagoon or between Harbor Island and Linda Isle.
Keep one of your VHFs on Channel 68 for the most updated information, along with following the parade on Facebook and Twitter.

Hey, Don or David, why don't you let me write posts on Facebook and Twitter? Also, make sure you keep a lookout for Peter Barbour and his under 30-foot boat in the parade. I feel Peter has more fun than anyone else on the parade route. Make sure you yell a big "thank you" to Peter this year.
The Ring of Lights awards are for our harbor's waterfront homeowners and were judged Monday night. Phil and Mary Lyons of Harbor Island won the 2011 Sweepstakes award.

Checking out all the waterfront homes is one of my favorite features of the parade. My understanding is that the Balboa Island South Bayfront homes go all out for this event, Lido Isle and the south Peninsula homeowners are getting more into the spirit, and my Ebenezer Scrooge award this year goes to the homeowners on the upper Balboa Peninsula and our local restaurants. I hope these two groups step it up next year!
It should be a perfect Christmas Boat Parade this year. Make sure you start "Feelin' Christmas-Sea in Newport Beach."

# 10 “PUSSYCAT” 34’ Peterson design built by Islander Yachts in 1979. Owner and crew stayed on top of PHRF C this season and won the coveted Newport High Point Series. The owner was last seen taking home most of the “pickle dishes” from BYC and BCYC awards banquets . She is berthed in Basin Marina.

# 9 “Its OK” 49’8” Alan Andrews design built by Dencho Marine in 2007. This yacht can be found racing to Hawaii and Cabo most years and can always be seen on BYC Beercans Thursday nights during the summer. Best known for her wine selection during the Ensenada race. It’s always good to have a “Its’s OK” Team Jersey. She is kept on the Balboa Peninsula.

# # 8 “ BIEN ROULEE” Is an Alan Andrews design and built by James Betts. She had an outstanding racing 2011 season winning the Ullman Offshore Series under 40'. Soon to be The Balboa Yacht Clubs Flagship in 2014. She is berthed on a BYC Mooring.

# 7 “MAULIOLA” 65’ Morrelli Melvin Performance Cruiser Catamaran built by Westerly Marine in 2011. First seen at BYC for her christening this summer, she is preparing for a world cruise and is kept on a mooring just south of BYC.

#6 “CATHLEEN” Built in 1960 by Driscoll Customs Boats works in 1960. Owned by one of our harbor finest yachtsmen and is kept in pristine condition. Seen this year at NHYC Opening Day, The Wooden Boat Festival and sailing the harbor most weekends. She is kept on a mooring just north of the NHYC and is under a full cover most of the time.

# 5 “CHUBASCO” 67’ She is Olin J. Stephens II # 255 design built in 1939 at the Wilmington Boat Works shipyard. “Chubby” has a long Trans Pac history starting in 1947. She is seen most every year at the Long Point race and has been extremely well cared for over the years. Berthed at the Ardell Marina.

#4 “METHETABEL” 76’ Pedrick Design built at Admiral Marine in 2000. Built of all composite materials after 11 years she is still “state of the art.” Last seen at Newport Shipyard for some bottom work getting ready for the Mexico cruising season. Berthed just west of the NHYC.

# 3 “MANAAKI” 40’ Friendship designed by Ted Fontaine. She will leave you speechless has she glides down Newport Harbor most weekends with the whole family aboard. Truly one of Newport gems! She is berthed on south side of Lido and kept under a full cover.

# 2 “TEAL” 42’ Hinckley Daysailor built in 2007 to a Bruce King design. I first noticed this boat pulling into Moonstone on a warm summer afternoon with ensign, club burgee and private signal all flying perfectly. Often seen sailing the harbor and outside. She is berthed next to the NHYC.

#1 “WINDWARD PASSAGE” 73’ Built on the Beach in the Bahamas in 1968 to an Alan Gurney design. Best known for Transpac greatest single performance and with a crew list from the Sailors Hall of Fame. Alan Andrews designed Keel and Rudder revision by Westerly Marine and Paint at Newport Shipyard within the last three years. She is berthed at the Ardell Marina. “In every sailors heart there is a piece of WINDWARD PASSAGE”.

2011Newport Beaches 20 Most Interesting Yachts.

This story is done in fun and to coincide with the 100 largest yachts, the world’s wealthiest people, down to The Daily Pilots 103 list. I spent a couple of days cruising the bay previewing boats that I have seen over this past season. My choices were made by what I feel are interesting and demonstrate the character of our harbor. Most of the boats I have selected are custom and have been in the harbor for a long time. To be honest with you I am just hoping to get the listing on these boats or at least be invited aboard?

# 10 “Watt R Winery” 22’ Custom Duffy Electric Boat. She was customized by Newport Shipyard with a hard top, teak trim, satellite TV, underwater lighting, heater, windless, wine cooler, head and one very large horn. She can be seen every Thursday afternoon on a harbor cruise and is berthed at the Balboa Bay Club.

# 9 “CHEYENNE” 125’ Morrelli & Melvin design. The boat is being re outfitted for an Five Dives Expedition and will carry a 18’ feet long submarine that is expected to be able to dive well below 36,000 feet deep. She is moored just west of the NHYC.

#8 “TYEE” 75’ Northern Marine Long Range Cruiser and expedition trawler. The interior features rare woods, choice granites and rich fabrics. The owners have a long tradition in yachting in Newport Harbor and have owned many different vessels. She is kept in pristine condition and lives on Lido Peninsula.

#7 FORGER 74' Commissioned in 1988 at the German Bültjer Shipyard in Ditzum to a Beeldsnijder design. It is immediately obvious that she is definitely a different sort of motor yacht. Her "iroko" topside gleam has countless coats of varnish. She came to town five years ago and is berthed on the end of Linda Isle.

# 6 "Royal Buzzard," a 70-foot Power Cat built in 2002 at Knight & Carver to a Morrelli & Melvin design. She has a 24-foot beam and is powered by twin 660HP Caterpillars. She can reach a top speed of 24 knots and caries 2,128 gallons of fuel. She has been seen cruising Mexico and docks at Balboa Island.

#5 “Following Sea” The original owner was a member of Newport Harbor Yacht Club who commissioned Ray Hunt to design a 52’ yacht for extended offshore cruising. Built by Dick Bertram in 1964, the construction was cold molded plywood and was said to be the lightest fastest cruising sport fishing boat on the west coast with a cruise speed of 20 knots. Restored by one of Newport’s biggest boat builders, she can be found in the NHYC mooring field.

#4 DRUMBEAT 49' She was built to a Kernan yacht design with a type of commuter boat styling. She was finished by a team led by Richard Crow from Orange Coast College and is now owned by one of our harbor's best yachtsmen. Often seen cruising the harbor or returning from weekend runs she seems to move through the water with little effort. Berthed on the end of Lido Isle.

# 3 “Sea Chase” 47’ Lyman Morse built in 1991. Built at Lyman Morse to a Ray Runt design in 1991. This masterpiece catches my eye every time I see her cruising the harbor. Last seen at Basin Shipyard getting a new bottom, she is as pretty out of the water as she is in her slip just north of BCYC before the bridge.

#2 GALATEA. She is a 53-foot heavy displacement trawler. She was designed by Art DeFever Sr. and built by Paul Lindwall in Santa Barbara for Bill Hanna. You should notice the Hanna name from the cartoons we still watch. She is powered by a single Caterpillar D333 that pushes her 105,000 pounds displacement through the water in expedition fashion. GALATEA was seen cruising the harbor and at Moonstone this year. She is berthed on the Balboa Peninsula.

#1’s That right we have two boats this year as Newport Harbors most interesting Power boats. Both boats are owned by the same owner and have been restored to their original design. The boat on the outside is “CRACKER” a 1956 31’ Rybovich Sportfisher hull

# 24 and re-powered with Cat Disels. The boat on the inside is “FOURBELLS” a 1955 36’ Rybovich hull number # 17 also re-powered with diesels. Both boats where completed this year and will be used for local fishing and cruising to Catalina. Quote from the owner “Project of Love”.

While returning into harbor this last weekend I noticed one of our local fisherman and thought it would make for a good story. With this in mind, I called one of my old school friends Tom Pearson of Pearson Port located at 100 E. Coast Highway phone (949) 675-6771. Tom and I really did go to school together in Huntington Beach while Tom’s father Roy opened up Pearson Port in 1971. Pearson’s Port, in my opinion, is our harbors best fish market and holds the spirit of a true American family business going on its third generation.

I do not know of anyone else who has spent more time on the water then Tom Pearson. If my simple calculations are correct he has spent 10,500 days on the water over the last 40 years. When I asked how many local fisherman we have in the harbor he replied “There are about 20 of us, the commercial industry is a close niche family. We have the occasional “Buoy Fisherman”, which is slang for noob, that needs to reminded of the rules from time to time. But you would be surprised on how close we all are”. I never noticed many local commercial fisherman at the yacht club bar, so I was wondering if this group ever gathered anywhere in town? “Most of the time we are on the water 5 days a week from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM and we still need to make time to maintain our equipment and boats. So, I’d have to say our meeting place is on the fishing grounds” When I asked Tom what VHF radio channel he and the local fisherman used, our signal kind of broke up and I really did not get a clear answer. “Most of the time I have the stereo on and don’t talk to anyone else. I will let my buddies know, in the day boats, if I see any whales or dolphins. As a whole we all try to help each other out”.

Aboard his boat “Harvest” a 26’ Radon he fishes for Lobster, Crab, Shrimp and whatever else his reels can catch. He has 250 traps and this year he was very lucky only losing about 15 traps. “ I was very fortunate this year, I lost about 30 pieces and recovered about 15 them by diving for them, or they wash up on the beach and the Lifeguards would return them, other boaters will bring them by the harbor department or even bring them by the market” explained Tom. Each piece is worth about $100.00 and he still recalls the storms of 1983 when he lost all of his gear. I then asked him what is the strangest thing you ever caught? “ I have brought up some pretty strange stuff but the “Wolf eels” are still at the top of my list” Next I asked him if he had superstitions like if he had a good day does he wear the same clothes the next day? “ No, he replied. I just say a short prayer before the start of everyday. What type of weather keeps you from fishing? “The wind and swell, I am to old to snorkel anymore. (Which means the waves are coming over the pilothouse and he needs a mask and snorkel just to work on deck) If the wind reaches about 30 Knots and the swell is steep I just do not have to do that any longer. Is it a good life I asked? Yes! It’s a good life and its still exciting. Tom replied. How does the future look? “Funny you should ask that Len, we have a major obstacle in front of us now with the Marine Life Protection Act or (MLPA) with the South Coast region going into effect on January 1^st 2012. This law is really going to bunch us up and put a lot of us out of business.” This is not really fresh news but if you forgot about this subject make sure you check out www.dfg.ca.gov/mlpa/ before January 1^st 2012.

Rhine Update - Week 16

Hi Everyone,

I thought I would end my weekly updates with a final list of Interesting Facts about the project. To me, they truly represent the collaborative and teamwork approach from everyone involved to ensure things went as smoothly as possible.

But, before I do that, I would like to thank a few people who helped make this project a success. They are (in no particular order):

1. The entire team at Anchor QEA, including Steve Cappellino, Michael Whelan and Rob Walker. Rob did a remarkable job keeping the ship afloat managing the day to day operations in the field. Well done!

2. The entire team at Dutra Dredging, including Steve Hutchison, Andrew Hunt and Scott McIvor. Their efficiency, professionalism, and public awareness were noticed by all, therefore positively affecting the overall outcome of the project.

3. Jesse Salem and Bruce Inlow at Bellport / Newport Harbor Shipyard were instrumental because of the large number of vessels that are under their control. In total, they relocated 143 boats in an orchestrated ballet each and every week.

4. Lastly, and most importantly, the individual Rhine Channel property owners who took ownership of the project through every stage. Without everyone’s help, understanding and patience, this project would not have been successful. Thank you!

Now, on to the final list of Interesting Facts:

1. The attached figures (preliminary draft) show the exact depths to which the Rhine was dug through the use of colors. You’ll notice about 5 areas that are much deeper than the surrounding areas. This is where we had to “re-dredge” in order to chase the contaminants deeper than expected. The figures create quite a mosaic so that we can now see the exact depths of the channel.

2. Approximately 250 boats were relocated throughout the project, including 143 from Bellport alone.

3. 123 piles were removed and replaced.

4. 90,000 cubic yards of sediment was delivered to the Port of Long Beach.

5. The tug made 105 round trips to the POLB.

6. The tug traversed through the harbor at least 400 times if you consider the hauling of full/empty scows back and forth to their mooring areas, along with the other ancillary equipment moves.

7. There were no accidents on the project.

8. Approximately 98,000 gallons of fuel was used on the project, with the bulk of that for the tug boats.

9. 3 Permits were required (Coastal Commission, Army Corps and the Water Board).

10. The Mitigated Negative Declaration took about 9 months to complete from start to finish.

11. About 25 legal agreements had to be executed between the City and the private property owners along the Rhine.

12. Approximately 200 water quality samples were taken throughout the project.

13. Approximately 200 sediment “grab” samples were taken, and about 75 sediment cores were collected to analyze post-dredge contaminants.

14. For the first 3 weeks of the project, there was daily contact with at least 5 different harbor user groups to coordinate the major end-of-summer sailing regattas, including the Sabot Nationals.

15. A brief history of the project’s evolution:

A. Studies first started in 2002-2003 by Southern California Coastal Water Research Project (SCCWRP) and Coastkeeper who found sediment toxicity and elevated metals, pesticides and PCBs in the Rhine.

B. In 2005, SCCWRP, Coastkeeper, Anchor QEA and the City teamed up to write a water quality grant request for money to conduct a feasibility study to find a solution for the sediments.

C. Between 2006 and 2009, the City looked at several options for contaminated sediment management including the use of an upland landfill or a Confined Aquatic Disposal site, but both were too expensive.

D. In late 2010, an option at the Port of Long Beach for disposal was finalized, and the City started preparing the necessary engineering and permitting studies.

E. Dredging began in August 2011 and ended in November 2011.

This concludes my regular updates. Once again, thank you for your patience and cooperation!

And now, just think, when we start dredging the Lower Bay in the next couple months, the Rhine folks won’t be impacted – what a relief!!

This is my weekly summary of events for the Rhine Project for November 7 – 11.

· Please see the attached figure. As you can see, this figure is now 100% finalized! All dredging is complete, all piles have been installed and all of the docks are available for vessels to return to their slips.

· This week, Dutra installed the last 4 piles along the docks in the Rhine. With all the practice they’ve had, this last bit went smoothly and efficiently.

· Dutra also made their last trip up to the Rhine Wharf to unload the crane barge of the random debris, piles and miscellaneous equipment used during the project.

· All of the miscellaneous dock work has been completed with the exception of a few pile caps at the American Legion marina.

· The barges and disposal scows are moored at the east end of the “H” Mooring Field until they are demobilized in the next few days. The excavator barge, however, will remain in the harbor until the Lower Bay dredging project begins in January.

· All of Dutra’s crews have demobilized to other projects along the West Coast.

· Interesting fact No. 15: The crane barge will be demobilized on Saturday and towed up to another project in Washington. To do this, a fairly large tug boat needs to tow the 210’ barge. A rough, ballpark estimate is that the tug will consume approximately 17,000 gallons of fuel over the six day trip to Washington!!! That’s a huge number especially when multiplied by an estimated $4 per gallon cost!!

Next week, I’ll be sending out my final Rhine update that will include a list of statistics about the project that I think you may enjoy.

The Harbor Report: Interesting sailors in our midst

At the end of this month, I will be announcing Newport Harbor's 20 most interesting boats.

While I was gathering information for this year's story I thought it would be fun to do a story on the harbor's two most interesting sailors this year.

Limiting this list to two people was not easy, but the more I thought about it, the easier it became. The two sailors who grabbed my attention this year are Jack Cannon and Christian Rosene.

Jack, 87, started racing Cal 20s in Newport Beach in 1962, and over the last 50 years, he has consistently remained active.

"One of my fondest memories was winning the Cal 20 Fleet Championships back on the '60s" Jack said.

After the Cals, Jack went on to sail in the Thistles, Etchells fleets and now is racing in the Harbor 20 and radio controlled sailing fleets. "I've always enjoyed staying active in our harbor's one-design fleets," he said.

When asked who his toughest competitor was, he replied, "I remember some great races against Ben Vaughn Klein Schmidt in the Cal 20 days."

His favorite part of the game is "the tactics, and I have always enjoyed the one-design battle where everyone is on an equal playing field."

When asked what has been the biggest change over the years, he replied, "In the '60s and '70s, there was a lot more activity. We used to have 10 different fleets starting almost every weekend."

Jack pointed out that his wife, Yvonne, was supportive.

"My fondest times sailing has been with my wife when she crewed for me," he said.

Jack's advice to a beginning sailor: "Be persistent and do not give up, because that's how you will find complete enjoyment in sailing."

I do not see Jack giving up his tiller anytime soon.

One cannot help but notice Christian's enthusiasm for sailing. This summer I have seen him in his Sabot, FJs, his father's Farr 30 and his grandfather's Farr 40.

Christian's love for sailing has been handed down through two generations. His grandfather Dennis Rosene has been racing in Newport Harbor for as long as I have. His father, Mark, has been very active over the last 10 years, racing on his father's boats and racing his own Farr 30.

"I have been on a boat since I was a little kid," Christian said.

This made me smile because he is only 10 years old.

He said his biggest achievements were when he "went from Sabots C2s to C1s in two days…"

He doesn't have a favorite event of the year.

His favorite moment on a boat "was this last weekend on Dan Rossen's B32, Problem Child. I have never surfed a boat before. That was a lot of fun. I want to do that again!"

His sailing mentors are Christophe Killian, Harrison Vandervort and Jack Martin.

"They are all really good people and have helped me a lot," Christian said.

By this time, I am starting to wonder how a 10-year-old has these types of answers.

So I thought I would throw him a curveball. He hit it out of the park.

When asked where he sees himself in 10 years, he said, "Well, I would like to win the Governor's Cup and attend either [UC Santa Barbara], Stanford, Yale or Boston College. After I have completed school, I plan on being a professional sailor."

Rhine update for October 31 – November 4:

Hi Everyone,

Here is my weekly Rhine update for October 31 – November 4:

· Please see the attached figure. You’ll notice (finally!) that the channel is all blue which means that dredging is now 100% complete! Quite a milestone, and a big sign that the project is nearly finished.

· This week, Dutra finished their re-dredge areas in Phase III. We had to go down a couple extra feet to ensure that we were at a nice, clean, sandy surface. It is truly amazing to see the surveys and to note how level the bottom is – a testament to the skills of the excavator operator indeed.

· Also this week, the crane barge completed their installation of 26 piles at the American Legion. This work went relatively smoothly, and the barge has moved off site back to the Rhine. There’s just some minor dock work to be patched up, and that should be done very soon.

· The last part of the project will be to install 4 remaining piles along the Lido Peninsula side of the Rhine Channel. Dutra is positioned to take care of this very soon.

· Next week, Dutra will make one final trip up to the Rhine Wharf to unload the few remaining pile, the random debris from the project, the pile driving hammer, and the portable restrooms.

· There’s still some remaining dock work that will take a few more days to complete, and we hope to have that wrapped up next week.

· Interesting fact No. 14: The large grate on the top of the disposal scow is used to sift the debris that is picked up by the excavator. Many interesting artifacts have been found including old bottles, random scrap metal, old anchors…and even an airplane tire (no kidding!)

Once again, thank you for your continued patience. The Rhine will soon be back in order with the navigation channels free and clear.

Here is my weekly Rhine Channel update for October 24 – 28.

Hi Everyone,

· Please see the attached figure. You’ll notice that we only have 2 small red boxes remaining, signifying that we’re almost done dredging!

· This week, Dutra finished dredging the 15^th Street public pier and the public pumpout dock areas. Because of the tight quarters at the public pier, they had to use the crane mounted clamshell bucket for most of the work in the dinghy area – a slow process. But they were successful, and the backside of the dock shouldn’t be sitting on the sand at extreme low tides. The rest of the public dock area was dredged by the excavator which was more precise and productive.

· With the American Legion marina completely removed, the excavator was able to quickly and efficiently dredge that area to the desired depth without any problems at all. This process took about 2-3 days, and was only limited by the availability of empty scows.

· Today, the American Legion marina was floated back to its original position and the pile driving operation began. There’s 26 piles to be driven, so we’re hoping to be done by mid next week. Vessels are not allowed back in the marina until the job is complete. Many thanks to American Legion Commander Jess Lawson and his team for assisting with this tricky operation.

· As previously mentioned, there are two areas in the Rhine Channel that need to be re-dredged so that we can get to a nice clean sandy bottom. Dutra started dredging those areas today, and will finish early next week. After that, dredging should be complete.

· Minor dock repairs are still taking place along all of the Phases, so please be patient with the smaller issues that you may have at your respective docks. Dutra will get to them before they demobilize in a few weeks.

· Interesting fact No. 13: In all, Dutra will have removed approximately 80,000 cubic yards of material from the Rhine Channel and other areas. To give some perspective as to this volume, 80,000 cubic yards would cover a football field about 45 feet high!

The Harbor Report: Sailing season is coming to a close

No matter how much I try to ignore it, fall is here and the 2011 sailing season is winding down. That means it's time for Newport Harbor's yacht club award banquets.

For me, the award nights are like the start of the holidays with all of your friends attending and remembering all the up and downs you had over the boating season. It also gives you time to start talking about what you have planned for next year.

Who knows? If you see your favorite competitor make his way to the awards' platform for the third time, you might just find the money for that new bottom you have been thinking about.

The first awards event this year is at the Balboa Yacht Club. "The Balboas" are scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 12.

The most distinguished award at BYC is the Sportsman of the Year award for "displaying outstanding sportsmanship during the yachting season."

Other sought-after awards given out this night will be the "Leo Collin Perpetual for sailing in the Sunkist, Twilights and Beercans." Also on the agenda is the presentation of The William & Ann Campbell Trophy for first place overall in the 66 Series.

BYC is also very proud to recognize Barry Wood for all his efforts in promoting "The Harry Wood Regatta," a race named after Barry's father. This is a unique award and I hope you can attend to get the whole scope on how the Wood family has earned such recognition.

The next event is the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club's awards night on Saturday, Nov. 19. The big award at BCYC is the Commodore Domanski for Outstanding Committee Chair Recipient, and the Commodore Bussey for Most Active BCYC Family Recipient.

This year is also rather unique because BCYC and BYC, at each of its respective events, will be giving an award to this year's "Newport High Point Champion." This award is given to the top-scoring PHRF boat in Newport Harbor and it's my understanding that these two trophies will be something to behold.

On Dec. 3, the Newport Harbor Yacht Club will have its annual meeting. This is the night when the "mother of all awards" in Newport Harbor is given out: The Burgee of Merit, which serves as NHYC's highest honor awarded to a West Coast yachtsman.

The criteria for receiving the Burgee of Merit include competing in the Olympic Games, winning a major world championship or bringing unusual distinction to West Coast yachting in general.

Another prestigious award at NHYC is the Fletcher Olson Perpetual Trophy, awarded to the non-calm/junior sailors who have shown the most outstanding sportsmanship and leadership throughout the year.

By attending these events you will find awards that you never knew existed.

Next year, you could find yourself attending your club's fishing tournament, watching a crew regatta from the Coast Highway bridge, or joining all the C3 sabot parents screaming at their kids from the Lido Isle main dock. Attending your club's awards night might just get you to use your boat five more times next year.

Who knows? You even could volunteer to do race committee or buy that sail you need so bad.

Over the next couple of weeks, I will be working on my list of Newport Harbor's 20 most interesting boats. Last year's response to this article was so strong that I was asked to do it again this year.

Counting Newport Harbor's amazing boats 2010

Over the next five weeks, I will be counting down Newport Harbor's 20 Most Interesting Boats. I received a fantastic response to the 10 Most Interesting Sailboats and now it's time to review this year's 10 Most Interesting Power Boats. Lets start with:

No. 10 "JUNO" 72' Built in 1969 in Holland Cammengas Yacht Yard. She is one of only six built for world cruising. Seen almost every weekend at Moonstone in the summer season, she does not sit still for long. You have to love that umbrella on the upper deck. She lives off Bayside Drive.

No. 9 "AVOCA" 36' The Seafoam Green Hinckley 36 picnic yacht. Last seen in Avalon this summer with family and friends enjoying Catalina. A truly beautiful yacht kept in perfect condition. She berthed under full cover in the dry storage racks at the Newport Shipyard.

Next on everyone's mind is what to give this holiday season to the sailor in your life. A couple of ideas looked interesting in cruising around the harbor this week:

1.) Ultrasonic Antifouling Ltd. now has an Ultra Series II system suited for every type of hull, ensuring owners enjoy their boating to the full with minimal yearly labor and cost. This is not a gag; Google it. If this thing works it might save on your bottom paint?

2. Planus is delighted to announce the"Magnetic Seat & Cover. The product solves the problem of falling seat and covers on board. That's right, this one keeps the head cover up. How many stories do you have when the head lid has crashed down on you?

3. At Basin Marine Shipyard, Derek New showed me the "Mooring Catcher," the perfect gift for the yachtsmen who does not want to run a dirty sand line down the side of their boat. How many times have you been in Catalina and picked up the sand line, and after you have attached the stern loop, it appears that someone has gotten sea sick down the side of your boat?

Holiday gift ideas for a sailor 2010

Continuing our countdown at No. 8 of Newport Harbor's 20 Most Interesting Boats:

No. 8: FORGER — 74' — Commissioned in 1988 at the German Bültjer Shipyard in Ditzum to a Beeldsnijder design. It is immediately obvious that she is definitely a different sort of motor yacht. Her "iroko" topside gleam has countless coats of varnish. She came to town five years ago and is berthed on the end of Linda Isle.

No. 7: DRUMBEAT — 49' — Originally commissioned for the previous owner of the No. 9 Sailboat "Rocket." She was built to a Kernan yacht design with a type of commuter boat styling. She was finished by a team led by Richard Crow from Orange Coast College and is now owned by one of our harbor's best yachtsmen. She is berthed on the end of Lido Isle.

I found some more ideas for what to leave under your sailor's Christmas tree. Everyone likes to be green around the holidays so I thought the Davis No Spill Fuel Recovery System would be the perfect stocking stuffer or it might bring a laugh if you bought it for the owner of the boat you are boarding for the upcoming Christmas Parade. You can find them at West Marine store locations or online.

Next I noticed the Argus Battery Bug. This looked like a very simple way to manage your electrical system on your boat. You can also find them at West Marine or online.

Harvey Wills from Western Marine Marketing told me about the GOST Cloak System.

"Most property loss occurs in the initial minutes of a break-in, before police or security teams have had a chance to respond," the GOST's website reads. "The GOST (Global Ocean Security Technologies — formerly Paradox Marine) Cloak system is designed to provide protection in the critical time gap between onboard alarm activation and the response team's arrival.

"In a matter of seconds, the GOST Cloak system fills the protected vessel interior with an impenetrable cloud of smoke that makes the intruder disoriented and confused and forces them off the vessel until the response team arrives."

This would make for some funny video of the bad guys leaving your boat or me, "The Yacht Broker," who did not follow the boarding instructions properly.

Arturo Yacht Maintenance has offered one free wash down. While you have Arturo on your boat, you should get a quote on your varnish or waxing your hull. Arturo can take care of most of your problems on your boat.

Attracting sailors, even in the rain

I wanted to give you my extended weather forecast for the rest of this year. It's going to rain, it's going to rain a lot, and I am too old to sail in the rain.

It does not mean that I do not want to sail. It just means I find other things to do on race day — like go upstairs into the yacht club, sit next to the fire, and have a huge breakfast.

It's truly not the best thing to do to increase my boat speed, but it was fun to watch the kids get ready for last weekend's Portsmouth Folly race at the Balboa Yacht Club. Harrison and Will Vandervort, Andrew Luttrell, and Megan Kenney, all moved around the club with plenty of enthusiasm, rigging their boats and watching the breeze and rain pick up.

I returned back to work and watched the race from the safety of my computer screen — another bad call on my part because 35 entries and more than 50 people showed up to race on that cold, wet winter day. The big winners were everyone who attended, and Susan Kenny was there again catching everything on film, which can be viewed atsusankenney.smugmug.com/Sailing. The people who brought home the pickle dishes were Molly Lynch, Paul Blank and Derek Pickell in the center board class and Tucker Cheadle, Karl Pomeroy and John Whitney in the Keel Boat class.

Speaking of pickle dishes — no pun intended, Derek — we are down to our last four powerboats of Newport Harbor's 20 Most Interesting Yachts:

No. 4: "Royal Buzzard," a 70-foot Power Cat built in 2002 at Knight & Carver to a Morrelli & Melvin design. She has a 24-foot beam and is powered by twin 660HP Caterpillars. She can reach a top speed of 24 knots and caries 2,128 gallons of fuel. She has been seen cruising Mexico and docks at Balboa Island.

No. 3: "Shanakee," a 78-foot Nordland and built to a Ed Monk design in 2008. Built for passages off the Pacific Coast and the glacial runways of Alaska's Inside Passage. She was crafted with a high-tech composite structure and just screams perfection. If she is in town you can find her on the Lido Peninsula.

This week I have saved the best gifts for last. Marshal Duffield has donated two hours off a Duffy Electric Boat. If you have never taken a harbor cruise on a Duffy, now is the time to place your name into our hat.

Rounding out year with top 2 boats 2010

This week it's time to wrap up my list of Newport Harbor's 20 Most Interesting Yachts. During the last six weeks, 10 of the harbor's sailboats have been recognized. Now, we are down to the last two of the 10 most interesting powerboats.

No. 2 — COLNETT. She is a 42-foot motor cruiser built in 1924 to a Edson B. Schock design and built by Seacraft Shipyard in Wilmington, Calif. This yacht's first two owners were presidents of the Tuna Club in Avalon and her original purpose was for catching swordfish. Her present owners purchased her in July 2007. She is seen cruising the harbor and over in White Cove in Catalina. COLNETT is berthed at Swales Anchorage in the southwest corner of the Coast Highway bridge.

No. 1 — GALATEA. She is a 53-foot heavy displacement trawler. She was designed by Art DeFever Sr. and built by Paul Lindwall in Santa Barbara for Bill Hanna. You should notice the Hanna name from the cartoons we still watch. She is powered by "Picnic Baskets." Just kidding. She carries a single Caterpillar D333 that pushes her 105,000 pounds displacement through the water in expedition fashion. GALATEA was the NHYC Flag Ship this year and has taken recent cruises to Alaska, Canada, Mexico, Tinsley Island, Channel Island and can be found at White Cove during the summer months. She is berthed on the Balboa Peninsula.

The year 2010 has been a very interesting one, and as I look back down the harbor there have been quite a few changes. Some good, some bad and some ugly. That's right it's time to insert the theme song for "The Good, Bad & The Ugly" of 2010. The good includes the new guest docks, No. 8 channel marker, Marina Park, the completion of the upper bay dredging, notice from the Port of Long Beach Harbor that the port will take our Rhine Channel toxic mud, BYC Rose Cup, NHYC Island Race, BCYC Around the Islands Race and the NAC rowing events. That is a lot of good, and I have to give a "well done" to Newport Harbor Resources Manager Chris Miller for doing an outstanding job this year.

Our lucky winners for the two-hour Electric Bay boat cruise donated by Marshal Duffield of Duffy Electric Boats are Samantha and Robbie Vient. I am also very proud to announce the winner of the "Free Haul Out" at Basin Marine, provided by my trusted friends Derek and Dave New, goes to Andrew Zimbaldi. I would like to thank all the Marine Vendors who took part in our Holiday gift bag and I hope you return next year.

So, what's bad within the harbor in 2010? I really cannot think of that much that is bad in the harbor other than the "overhang" issue and the huge charter boat fleet that is continuing to grow. Let's also not forget about our Harbor zoning changes. That's all! These topics should make for some good press in 2011.

Now for the ugly, and you guessed it. I still have my panties in a bunch over the increase to our tideland permits and policy change to mooring transfers. I do not plan to go on another rant. Let's just say I hope my instincts are wrong on these issues and I do not have to write "I told you so" anytime soon.

Weekly Rhine Channel update for October 17 – 21.

Hi everyone,

This is my weekly Rhine Channel update for October 17 – 21.

· All was quiet on the jobsite this week now that pile driving is over and dredging is nearly complete. However, Dutra used this time to perform maintenance on their equipment, and to work on some of the miscellaneous dock repairs that are still outstanding in all of the Phases. We’re still waiting for some parts to arrive (mostly guide rollers), so that is holding up some of the dock work repairs. We’ll finalize everyone’s docks in the next couple of weeks.

· On Tuesday, Dutra started to prepare the American Legion marina for its temporary relocation next door to Marina Park. Then, on Wednesday, most of the piles were removed, leaving only a couple for stability overnight. On Thursday, the last of the piles were removed, and the entire marina was floated over and secured. A very gentle operation, but things worked out smoothly without any hitches. Good job to the crew for making this happen!

· On Friday, Dutra picked up the last load of piles from the Rhine Wharf, and dropped off a load of used piles. They also completed some touch up dredging on the Lido Peninsula then moved over to the 15^th Street public pier for dredging in the mid afternoon. They didn’t quite finish everything, so they’ll resume back at 15^th Street on Monday morning for a short while. If you have a dinghy at this pier, please have it removed by Monday morning.

· Also on Monday, Dutra will begin dredging the American Legion marina. This should be a relatively straightforward dredging operation now that the marina is completely removed. This work may take 3-4 days or so. Then, after dredging the American Legion, the marina will be floated back into its original position, and new piles will be reinstalled.

· Most of Phase III is complete, but it’s looking as if we might have to re-dredge a couple pockets in the main channel. If this is decided, it might take place near the end of next week, or the first part of the following week.

· Please see the attached figure which shows our progress. As you can see, most of the red areas are now blue signifying that the dredging is complete.

· Interesting fact No. 12: The disposal scows are electronically monitored for their entire trip from Newport Harbor to the Port of Long Beach. Each scow is equipped with sensors that measure how deep the scow is floating in the water, so the slightest change triggers an alarm. This is important because it warns us if there’s a leak. Also, there’s a GPS style tracking device that shows the exact path that the scow makes on its way to the Port of Long Beach, so there’s never any question as to exactly where the scow is at all times. This data is monitored by a 3^rd party as per the permit from the Army Corps of Engineers.

Once again, thank you for hanging with us during this project. We’ll be done in a few short weeks!

Monday, October 17, 2011 Back to WORK today after 4 days of mark set for BYC and the US Sailing Match Racing Championships.

I had one of my “Silly Ideas” this weekend! What if each yacht club in Newport Beach recognized the people who pick up the most trash out of the water inside and outside? For what’s it worth to you I will write about it in my Pilot Column!

"How I came up with this SILLY IDEA!”

This weekend I was assigned to be the weather markset boat with Mike Pinckney and while we were talking I made the comment. “If you are not busy, pick up a broom a sweep” that’s when it happened, I needed to sweep so we then started to look for Mylar Balloons. We picked up 12 of them this weekend and only missed one because we where under tow with 6 boats behind us.

So if you read my stories and you pick up some trash out of the water and take a photo and send it in. I will write about it in my column.

Hi everyone,

This is my weekly Rhine Channel update for October 10-14:

· Please see the attached figure. You’ll notice that the red area is continuing to shrink as it turns to blue which means that the dredging is complete. In order to accommodate the three marinas on the peninsula side near 19^th and 20^th Streets, we hurried to finalize their area so their slips could be occupied again. Hence, we carved out a section of Phase III and finalized that area before the rest of the phase was complete.

· Those three marinas previously mentioned were out of their slips a total of 16 days which is a record for the project!! This is directly related to Dutra’s dredging efficiency during the first phases of the project.

· Pile driving activities in the Rhine are completely over, as the last pile was driven on Wednesday. We really appreciated everyone’s patience during this tricky part of the project.

· Unofficially, Dutra has finished dredging in the Rhine Channel. We’ll still need to do confirmatory sediment testing, so we’ll know for sure next week. We’re feeling pretty confident that they won’t have to re-dredge the main channel in Phase III, but we’ll let the chemistry give us the direction we need.

· There’s still some outstanding carpentry related issues on the docks in each phase, and Dutra is steadily working on taking care of these, probably on Monday and Tuesday next week.

· Dutra spent yesterday and today dredging in the docks along the Lido Peninsula side of the channel. This was extremely delicate dredging as the crane barge was used instead of the traditional excavator barge. The reason for this is because the crane is able to reach out further (next to the bulkhead) unlike the excavator. Also, each individual small slip was carefully dredged – not an easy task! Please see the attached pictures that show this process.

· The next, and last component of the project is dredging the American Legion marina on Wednesday. This will be challenging because we’ll be pulling 26 piles out of the marina, then floating the entire marina over in front of the Marina Park property for a while. This will allow Dutra to gain access to the inside of the Legion’s marina with their large equipment. Then, the marina will be floated back to its original location and 26 piles will be driven in place. All in all, this operation might take a couple weeks.

· Interesting fact No. 11: The clamshell bucket used for crane dredging holds 6 cubic yards of material. The crane on the barge is not designed to be a “fast cycle” crane traditionally used for dredging. However, because there were limited quantities of hard-to-reach material for this project, Dutra improvised with this slower type crane…and it worked very well.

Should Newport Beach have Marine Recycling Centers?

I am still moving forward with the Marine Recycling Center idea for Newport Beach. Two weeks ago Harbor Commissioner Ralph Rodheim and I went to Dana Point to meet with Brad Gross and Paul Lawrence of Dana Point Harbor. The concept of this sortie was to learn the details of Dana Point Harbors Marine Recycling Center and if possible copy these centers in Newport Beach.

Let me take two steps back and tell you how I got this idea. I was cleaning my boat out one day and found I had diesel fuel in my bilge and then proceeded to sponge it into a two gallon bucket. When deciding on how to dispose of the fuel I found I had four choices. The first choice was to dump it in the waste bin or into the gutter, I could take it to one of the fuel docks and pay $20 to dispose of it or I could drive all the way to Northern Huntington Beach and dispose of it at the Rainbow disposal yard. Keep in mind I am lazy and cheap and always look for the easiest out. About this time I wondered if the city had a solution?

Before I meet with Commissioner Rodheim I thought I had better look into what Newport Beach’s has in place already and gave Dave Beek and Gary Hill, the owners of our local fuel docks, a call. Both fuel docks will take your absorbent pads and waste oil at no cost. I also leaned from these two plus Dave New at Basin shipyard that people quite often just leave their waste at their doorstep.

So with the understanding we might find a better system of disposing of this type of waste Commissioner Rodheim and I proceeded to Dana

Point in a fact finding mission. I had also perversely placed a call to Orange County Supervisor John Moorlach for assistance in my research and I did receive a couple of emails from Moorlach staff. On our arrival to Dana Point we received a warm welcome from Mr. Gross and it quite obvious that he and his staff would like to help us with this project.

After inspecting the west and east Basin Recycling Centers both Ralph and I felt we should proceed to investigate into this idea further

A Warm "Indian Summer" Day

The past weekend must have been one of my best weekends on Newport Harbor.

It ranked right up there with sailing Hobie 16s in 1975 off 17th Street, getting a speeding ticket for my first "beer can" race in 1983 or winning a Harbor 20 race this summer with my wife Jennifer.

I had a cold beverage in hand, my feet were up on the cockpit rail of the "Golden Rivet," and I was sharing the company of two very good friends of mine: Amy and Chuck Simmons. We had tied the boat up, stern to, on a single mooring just off "M" Mark.

About five minutes later, Jill and David Willke pulled up with their boat, the Gemini, and side-tied next to us. Before we had them tied up securely, Melisa and Eric Bozza came by the boat in their whaler.

I cannot think of better company with whom to spend a warm "Indian Summer" day on Newport Harbor. I mean, just the term "Indian Summer" makes you feel like you are getting away with something.

But like my father always tells me, you don't get something for nothing. So, just about then, our kids started to sail past our flotilla of fun in their sabots for the start of the C3 class in the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club.

The setting was perfect: We were located about 25 yards down from the leeward mark, with good friends, warm weather and good times. Then the racing started and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde showed up.

The current was going out with a vengeance and the flag on top of the pavilion barely moved. It was the perfect ingredient for some real character-building moments. As my kid approached the first weather mark, I could not help but think of Adam Sandler in "Happy Gilmore," trying to learn how to putt. But he did finally get the ball into the hole and make it around the weather mark.

As my son Andrew approached the leeward mark, I could see he was trying his best and he really did not want to look at me. But I could not help myself and my mouth started moving.

"Sheet in! Put your bow down and lean in a little," I shouted over the water.

Not really the smart thing to say. Thank goodness one of the other parents started telling their kids what to do.

Next, the kids had to sail upwind into the current to the finish line and we all tried our best to bite our tongues. By the time the weekend was over, the kids were not looking over and waving any longer, the coaches would look the other way when they passed by, and we were getting better at holding our tongues.

There were some classic moments. For example, the kid who tried hard to sail into the current, yet never managed to sail past the starting line. There was also the parent who told another parent: "I was just asked to get off the race course. Is it OK if I join you?"

"I can't stand it anymore," said the other parent, who got a paddleboard to go help his little one.

And then there were the three kids who had finished their race and were interested in finding the big dead fish floating around. You just got to love that term "Indian Summer" in Newport Harbor.

A Warm "Indian Summer" Day - Unedited

This last weekend had to have been one of the best weekends I have had on Newport Harbor. It ranks right up there sailing Hobie 16’s in 1975 off of 17^th street and getting a speeding ticket or my first Beercan race on Amanate in 1983 and or winning a Harbor 20 race this summer with my wife Jennifer.

At this moment in time I had a cold beverage in hand, my feet up on the cockpit rail of the “Golden Rivet” with two very good friends of mine Amy and Chuck Simmons. We had tied the boat up, stern to, on a single mooring just off M Mark. About five minutes latter Jill and David Willke pulled up with their boat Gemini and side tied next to us. Before we had them tied up securely Melisa and Eric Bozza came by the boat in their Whaler. I cannot think of better company to spend a warm “Indian Summer” day on Newport Harbor with. I mean, just the term “Indian Summer” makes you fell like you are getting away with something. Here is my Rhine Channel weekly update for September 26 – 30.

· Please see the attached figure that shows the progress to date.

· You won’t notice too much of a difference with the red dredging area this week compared to last. This is because the “easy” production dredging in the center of the channel is complete, leaving the more difficult dredging in between the slips to continue at a much slower pace. Dutra is making progress though, and is still way ahead of schedule.

· The pile driving operations are still going smoothly, and Dutra is completely done driving pile on the peninsula side of the channel. A milestone indeed! There is still some residual dock work around the piles to be completed, and they’ll resume those tasks next week.

· We had to re-sample the Phase II area, so we’re still waiting for those results. There is a possibility that Dutra may need to go back and touch up a few areas, but we won’t know for sure until the first part of next week. This is why we haven’t allowed the remaining Phase II boats to return to their slips just yet. It’ll be very soon though.

· There will be no dredging or pile driving work this weekend.

· This week was very productive for the Phase III docks on the peninsula side of the channel. Dutra started, and finished, dredging those docks on Tuesday, and the piles were driven on Wednesday and Thursday. We’ve sampled that side of the channel but we’re still waiting for results. I’m optimistic, but we’ll know more early next week. In any event, those Phase III docks will have been impacted the least by a huge margin – a direct benefit of Dutra’s efficiency earlier in the project.

· The Phase III docks along the Lido Peninsula side of the channel are more challenging because of the tight quarters and the multitude of smaller boats that have to be relocated. I am extremely grateful for the assistance and cooperation from the folks at Bellport and Newport Harbor Shipyard, specifically Jesse Salem and Bruce Inlow. They’ve done a great job of orchestrating the giant “boat shuffle.”

· Since most of the production dredging is complete, the larger “Weeks” disposal scow will be leaving us this weekend, as well as the larger Brusco tug. This will leave us with the two smaller scows, with a smaller tug coming down to handle the rest of the project.

· Interesting fact No. 9: The “Weeks” disposal scow actually splits itself apart, right down the middle, when it drops its load at the Port of Long Beach. (Sorry, no pictures – it’s usually at the POLB late at night.) The two other smaller scows have a series of trap doors that open up on the bottom to drop their load. (See attached picture – notice the 4 internal compartments that equalize the load. Also, the grate on top (known as a “grizzly”) catches the random debris so it doesn’t get dumped at the POLB.)

The Harbor Report: Several silly ideas to ponder this week

I have been working on several of my "Silly Ideas," and I wanted to share them with you.

This year I have written a couple of columns about Newport Harbor's PHRF Hi-Point Championships, a series awarded by the Assn. Of Orange Coast Yacht Clubs (AOCYC).

The races include the ALYC Midwinter's, BYC 66 Series No. 1, Ahmanson Cup Regatta, Angleman Series No. 1 and the Argosy Regatta. I had a custom burgee made by Nikki's Flags for this event and asked the Balboa Yacht Club to help cover some of the cost for placing the burgee under glass and making it into a new trophy.

Now, I just need to attend this weekend's AOCYC meeting at BYC

and try to talk them into allowing the different Newport Beach yacht clubs to recognize the winner at their annual awards banquets this year. I feel this is the best way to gain more recognition of this great event and try to promote PHRF sailing in Newport Harbor.

My next "Silly Idea" came to me at one of the Harbor Commission meetings I attended this year. While in Dana Point Harbor, I noticed two marine recycling centers. These are where boaters can dispose of waste oil, absorbent pads, oil filters, batteries, transmission fluid and engine coolant free of charge without having to drive to the Rainbow disposal site in northern Huntington Beach .

Now the devil will be in the details on this idea but I am going to give it my best effort. I am sure most of my readers already know that Island Marine Fuel Dock and Hill Fuel Dock will take your used absorbent pads and, if you ask nicely, your waste oil. Just give Dave or Gary a call and they will give you the details.

My last idea this week is a recommendation. Take a second and go to iTunes and look up the song from The Wolverines, "What A Bloody Great Day To Go Sailing." It's perfect for the boat.

The Harbor 20 Championships is this weekend at Newport Harbor Yacht Club. I promised Mary Bacon, the skipper of "Rascal II," that I will have all my superstitions in place before the start of the first race.

In A fleet this coming weekend, its anyone's race. I just hope that fellow BYC members Karen and Gary Thorne are not superstitious about winning A Fleet in the Schock Fall Regatta last weekend. It's bad luck to win the event before the main event!

Save these dates! We have a couple of very important events coming up fast on us.

The first is the American Legion Yacht Club's "Sail for the Visually Impaired" on Oct. 15. The group is looking for boat owners to take some people out sailing that day. For more information about this event, please go to the American Legion website. I need to give a shout out to all the Harbor 20 and PHRF boat owners to check into this event and volunteer.

Next we have the Hoag Cup on Oct. 22-23, presented by BYC and NHYC. Fundraising for Hoag Hospital will be created through entry fees, and contributions from various yacht club members who wish to support Hoag.

This is always one of our harbor's premier events to raise money for our local hospital, while racing top Southern California sailboats. The racing will include the Fast 40 fleet, TP52 and the 70's fleet.

Hi everyone,

Here is my Rhine Channel weekly update for September 19 – 23.

· Please see the attached figure that shows the progress to date.

· Dredging activities are still proceeding as planned. You’ll notice the blue “dredging complete” and the red “active dredging zone” areas have slightly enlarged, therefore marking steady progress.

· This last week, Dutra had to retrace their footsteps and dig a little deeper in the wide channel in Phase II. This was because the sediment chemistry told us that their initial targeted depth did not take us down to “clean” material, so another pass was necessary. As of Friday afternoon, Dutra had finished this second pass so we’ll go back and re-test to confirm that we’ve hit clean material.

· Phase II pile driving activities are also nearly complete with just a little more work on the Lido Peninsula side of the larger channel. The pile work is going smoothly with very little complications.

· Phase III dredging begins on Tuesday, September 27 at 7:00 AM. The Phase III marinas must have their vessels removed by then, and there will not be a grace period like in Phase I. The good news is that Phase III is anticipated to be much shorter than originally planned because of Dutra’s efficiency with the project. I’ll be sure to keep everyone posted, but I’m hopeful Phase III will last just a few short weeks.

· As you can probably tell today, there is no work planned for this weekend, so we all get to enjoy a couple days off.

· On Monday, the pile driving barge will be back at the Rhine Wharf to unload the old piles, then load up the last batch of Phase II piles.

· Interesting fact No. 8: The pile driving barge has 2 large “spuds” that are dropped into the sediment to keep the barge steady when it’s busy working. These spuds are about 80’ long, therefore enabling the barge to spud down in channels that are 60’ deep – much deeper than the Rhine Channel!

Chris Miller weekly update for September 12 – 16.

Hi everyone!

This is my weekly update for September 12 – 16.

· Please see the attached figure that shows the progress to date. You’ll notice that the blue area has been enlarged which means that more dredging is complete. We’re nearly done dredging the smaller part of the channel which therefore frees things up from a navigation standpoint.

· Dutra is still dredging the larger part of the channel in Phase II. They’ve made their first pass to design depth, but our sediment chemistry is indicating that we’ll need to dig deeper. Therefore on Monday, they’ll return back to the bend of the channel and work their way through that section again.

· The pile driving effort has gone smoothly these past few days in Phase II. Dutra has installed all of the piles along the Lido Peninsula side of the channel (before rounding the corner), and they’ve now started on the peninsula side and working down towards the Balboa Boat Yard. You can see the yellow boxes on the attached figure that show their progress. After they get to the Balboa Boat Yard, they’ll shift back to the Lido Peninsula side and drive more piles there.

· On Saturday, there will be no dredging or pile driving work. Dutra’s crew will be enjoying their weekend…as I’m sure you will too.

· Dutra is doing a great job of coordinating with the various restaurants and shipyards so as to minimally disrupt their business operations. We’ll continue to focus on this outreach during the last part of Phase II and III. If you have any specific questions, please give me a call and I’d be happy discuss the project with you.

· Phase III is fast approaching, and our plan is to officially start that area with vessel relocations on September 27. As you look at the attached figure, you’ll notice that most of the main channel has already been dredged which means that the Phase III boaters should be minimally impacted. We’ll have a better idea as the next couple weeks unfold.

· Remember, the City is offering free moorings to those boaters that need to vacate their slip. Please call the Harbor Patrol (949-723-1002) for arrangements, and identify yourself as a Rhine Channel displaced boater.

· Interesting fact No. 7: The pile driving hammer weighs about 16,000 pounds, with the inner slug weighing about 10,000 – 12,000 pounds. The driving force of the hammer is about 55,000 foot pounds.

We’re making great progress and are ahead of schedule. Thank you for everyone’s patience and cooperation!

9-14-11 Harbor Commission Meeting

I attended the 9-14-11 Harbor Commission meeting and it kind of felt like going to Costco, filling up your cart and when you get to the check out line you find out your debit card has expired?

The meeting started out with Council Member Nancy Gardner, Council Liaison to the Harbor Commission interrupting Chairman Rodheim “again” and informed the Commission that she needed to leave early. She then said that the agenda appeared to be light and that the Commission did not need to meet every month. The expression on each of the commissioner’s face’s looked like their debit card had expired! Not that Nancy met anything bad by her comment in fact the opposite is true. The relationship between the City Council and the Harbor Commissioners is like any relationship. You are going to have your ups and downs and if you want to keep the relationship going you are going to have to bite your tongue from time to time.

Once Council Member Gardner left the Commissioners seemed to gather their composer and the meeting moved along. In fact it was one of the most productive meeting I have attended.

Chairman Roheim reviewed each Commissioners task list and asked each of them to report next month with an update on when and how their tasks will be completed. Let me try to recall what each Harbor Commissioner is tasked with. I did not take any notes on this so.

Doug West is working on the Harbor Guide, Changing the City Ordnance to allow permitted events to exceed the speed limit and is the Tideland Management Committee Liaison.

Duncan McIntosh is tasked with review of code enforcement and Changing the City Ordnance to allow permitted events to exceeded the speed limit.

Brad Avery is looking into Charter Boat Standards and review of code enforcement.

Marshall Duffield is working on Mooring alignment, and Charter Boat Standards

Vincent Valdes is working on The Vision of the Harbor and overhang policys.

Karen Rhyne is working as a Liaison with the many State committees.

After the commissioners task review Chairman Rodheim appraised the “Topics for the future Agendas”. I in fact was able to help with this because one of the future topics was ways to dispose of toxic materials which I brought up some time ago. More on this at a later date.

Interview with our Tug Captain and an Explanation on what happened at the end of The Balboa Peninsula

I never knew that the crew on the tug stayed aboard for most of the month. “This job we are running with a Double Crew Boat” the captain informed me. This means that there are 4 people on the boat, split into two watches completing 12 hour tricks, each watch has its own Captain and deckhand. I did not ask how you get the 6:00 to 18:00 watch? Each crew is working for six days straight and taking Sundays off. The crew can work for a month and then must take a month off. The deckhands are responsible for maintaining winches, hourly engine room inspections, updating the log books and adjusting the tow lines. “The most difficult thing on a double crewed boat is that each watch likes certain things in different places. This can be very frustrating” the Captain told me.

We talked a little about where he, The Captain, gets his weather information. “ I don’t overdue the weather, I can talk myself out of A run, very easily, when I spend too much time looking at the weather” the captain said. I use the NOAA weather reports and spend a little time online. My best source of information is still the barometer, I was able to pick up on that strange weather we had last week by watching the cloud formation and keeping my eyes on the barometer.

While out at sea the boat sets up its towing bridle and pulls the barge at 6 knots which makes for 4 hour runs to Long Beach. We enter into Long Beach Harbor at the east entry, Alamitos Bay entry, and continue our route into the West Basin Slip 1 Long Beach Harbor. At night the tug has three white lights on their mast, which indicates a tow of 600 + feet. The barge has a red and green on the bow and white on the stern.

I also asked what is the best way to reach the tug should you notice a problem for them. “We keep a close eye out for what’s in front of us. If something happens and you need to get our attention pick up a life jacket and start waving it.” The captain told me.

THE LITTLE MISS HAP ON THE PENINSULA

I got the scope on the little miss hap on the end of the Peninsula with the barge and the 80' Ocean Alexander. It all happened before our local dredging operators “Dultra” received the scows. I was told that “Dultra” is chartering a couple of scows from another company out of San Diego. This company delivered the scows to Newport Harbor and while proceeding into the harbor they had one scow under tow and pushing the other. With the scows being empty something tells me the water was going out of the bay and when the tug tried to make the turn up the harbor they lost control.

The Harbor Report: Meet the tugboat skipper "Unedited"

This week I had a chance to talk to Captain Peter Paget of the tug “Terri L Brusco” and no pun intended what a boatload of information I received. Now the challenge is with all this information “sloshing” around my head lets see if I can put a story together.

The “Terri L Brusco” is the tugboat you see in the harbor moving the barges from Newport to the Port of Long Beach and back. Captain Peter Paget has just completed a month of work and now must take a month off. He started his career some 30 years ago in Alaska and has kept his hand firmly on the helm every since. “ As a kid I sailed in Portland Oregon and became fascinated with the Tugs. The only way I could find work was move to Alaska and work 7 days a week for 6 months. After a couple of seasons, I had the experience to look other jobs” Capt Paget explained.

The purpose of this story is to give the Newport Harbor users a better idea on what the Tug Captains have to deal with and get a better understanding on how to give the Tugs enough room. I am going to assume my readers are not the Harbor Users that take their electric boats along side the barges, while they are under way, or the paddle boarders that paddle through the tugs wash or even the High Speed power boat that was outside last week following the Dolphins and crossing between the barge and the tug? So for your own interest lets review some of the information Captain Paget reviewed with me. While the barge is being pushed the Tug and barge become one and the barge is maneuvered “Basically like a large vessel” the captain told me. “ When we are maneuvering at the 5 point mooring, the turning basin, things can be a little tricky. When the barge is empty and if the wind is up past 10 knots, along with an out going tide we have to approach our mooring at a 90 degree angle and make adjustments for whatever else confronts us” Capt. Paget said. I then asked the Captain what are some sound signals we should listen for? “5 short blasts, Danger, Danger. We try not to use sound signals in Newport Harbor, I don’t think the residents would want to hear ever sound signal at 3 AM everyday as if this was a comical harbor” The Captain explained.

Other items I learned while talking to Captain Peter Paget. If at night, while in the harbor, you notice two white lights on the forward mast of the tug and a red and green light coming toward you that’s your first indication that its the Tug pushing the barge towards you. If you want to contact the Tug you can hail them on VHF Channel 16 or Channel 13. “If there was one thing I would like your readers to remember VHF Channel 13 is it” the Capt. told me. Most of the commercial information is passed along this channel, you should also write down Channel 14 for Vessel Traffic Service San Pedro (VTS) and Channel 74 Long Beach Pilot. Also keep in mind, while at sea, the barge is traveling about 6 knots and is roughly 900 feet behind the Tug, in rough weather it can be double that. The Tug will not be towing in heavy fog or big seas over 8 feet. “If the cargo starts sloshing around because of high seas and winds we will not be able to complete our run” Captain Pete told me. After talking to the Captain I felt like I was talking to a long time friends at the Yacht Club. He is a sailor at heart and loves being on the ocean. As a seat of the pants sailor myself, I felt lucky that we have Captain Peter Paget at the helm.

This weekend feels like the end of summer blow out sail. We have the Wooden Boat Festival at the American Legion, The last race of the Newport High Point Series with the “Argosy Race” to Catalina and the “Roy Woolsey” Lido 14 and Laser race at Lido Isle. Hi everyone!

This is my weekly update for September 5 – 10.

· Phase II is well underway with the dredging of the smaller channel nearly complete as of the time of this email. They’ll be rounding the corner to the larger channel any day now, therefore freeing up access to and from the smaller channel. Remember to hail Dutra on VHF Channel 82 if you need to pass. It’s important that we stay safe!

· Dutra will be dredging on Saturday this weekend to keep the project moving along.

· A big “Thank You” to all of the Phase II marinas and boaters who relocated their vessels this week in time for the dredging activity. This cooperative spirit is one of the major reasons why the project is proceeding smoothly.

· Dredging of Phase II will last until approximately the end of next week, then the pile driving crane barge will return and do its work.

· Even though Phase II has just begun, we need to start thinking about Phase III boat relocations. I say this because Dutra is ahead of schedule (much of the center channel has already been dredged), therefore they’ll be moving to Phase III sooner than later. I should have more details by next week’s update, but the Phase III marinas/boaters need to start preparing for their moves possibly by the end of the month.

· On that same note, however, Phase III will probably be shorter than expected. Dutra’s dredging efficiency will shave days off of the back end of Phase III.

· Interesting fact No. 6: As of this week, Dutra has delivered about 30,000 cubic yards of material from the Rhine Channel up to the Port of Long Beach via barge.
